This might be Mac Barnett's and Jon Klassen's crowning achievement。 They've definitely surpassed the strange existential trip that was Square, Triangle and Circle and moved into the realm of solid storytelling。 They've still retained the quirks of their earlier work, though。 This might be Mac Barnett's and Jon Klassen's crowning achievement。 They've definitely surpassed the strange existential trip that was Square, Triangle and Circle and moved into the realm of solid storytelling。 They've still retained the quirks of their earlier work, though。 。。。more

The Three Billy Goats Gruff finally released and it will for sure be my book of the year for 2022。 Months ago I decided that Jon Klassen’s illustrations would be the big win here。 I was so wrong! Somehow… somehow… Mac Barnett stayed perfectly true to the classic story but at the same time made it fresh and delightfully silly。 I smiled my way through every single page。 It’s classic! It’s new! And it is oh so brilliant。

What starts out as a pretty standard retelling of the three Billy goats gruff soon turns into something surprising and extremely satisfying。 Not to mention the fantastic and hilarious illustrations。 I loved this story, and it will fit right in with other fairytale retellings like The Stinky Cheeseman。 Kids of all ages are sure to get a laugh。 I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest review。

I received an electronic ARC from Scholastic, Inc。Barnett and Klassen have created another amusing story。 This retelling of the Three Billy Goats stays true to the original and adds more fun to the Troll character。 Barnett's rhythmic text brings the story to life for readers, and Klassen's artwork adds fun with the details。 I appreciate the character expressions throughout。 Reading this together could lead to some interesting dialogue as Barnett challenges readers to cross the bridge themselves I received an electronic ARC from Scholastic, Inc。Barnett and Klassen have created another amusing story。 This retelling of the Three Billy Goats stays true to the original and adds more fun to the Troll character。 Barnett's rhythmic text brings the story to life for readers, and Klassen's artwork adds fun with the details。 I appreciate the character expressions throughout。 Reading this together could lead to some interesting dialogue as Barnett challenges readers to cross the bridge themselves - would you do it? 。。。more

Excellent retelling of a classic fairy tale with dark and dingy art that pairs perfectly with the tone。 I loved the alternating rhyming and unrhymed text and the silly ramblings of the troll。 I am now eagerly awaiting the promised additional books to the series!

Do you dare cross the bridge where a troll lives waiting for his next snack? Well, three goats dare to pass and outsmart the hungry troll。 He is led to believe by each goat that their brother is much bigger, and he would want to eat them instead, but the poor troll doesn't know what is coming his way。 Readers will enjoy this cute book with a fun ending。 The illustrations are perfect for the spooky season。 Children will enjoy this story。 Do you dare cross the bridge where a troll lives waiting for his next snack? Can Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen just chill out and save some talent for the rest of the world???How this story manages to hook me like I've never heard the Three Billy Goats Gruff before is some magical alchemy that I'll never understand but am 100% here for。 If I don't get to read it out loud to someone in the immediate near future I will simply implode。 Can Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen just chill out and save some talent for the rest of the world???How this story manages to hook me like I've never heard the Three Billy Goats Gruff before is some magical alchemy that I'll never understand but am 100% here for。 If I don't get to read it out loud to someone in the immediate near future I will simply implode。 。。。more

Fabulous retelling of a classic tale! Love the humor and voice of the narrator。

Barnett retells the Norwegian folktale with some rhyming versus sharing every which way a troll could cook up a goat trying to cross his bridge。 Klassen's muted and distinct color palette is like no other children's illustrator and these watercolor, graphite, and ink drawings subtly enhance Barnett's words without overtaking the story。 Illustrations that perfectly compliment the story at hand。 Barnett retells the Norwegian folktale with some rhyming versus sharing every which way a troll could cook up a goat trying to cross his bridge。 Klassen's muted and distinct color palette is like no other children's illustrator and these watercolor, graphite, and ink drawings subtly enhance Barnett's words without overtaking the story。 Illustrations that perfectly compliment the story at hand。 。。。more

Reviewed from an ARC from the publisher。A fresh, manic retelling of the traditional Norwegian tale, as only Mac Barnett can weave。"Once upon a time, there as a bridge。 And beneath that bridge, there lived a troll。 The troll would sit in the mud and the rubble and trash, listening, waiting, hoping for someone to cross the bridge above his head。 'I am a troll。 I live to eat。 I love the sound of hooves and feet and paws and claws on cobblestones。 For that's the sound of meat and bones!'。。。" So begi Reviewed from an ARC from the publisher。A fresh, manic retelling of the traditional Norwegian tale, as only Mac Barnett can weave。"Once upon a time, there as a bridge。 And beneath that bridge, there lived a troll。 The troll would sit in the mud and the rubble and trash, listening, waiting, hoping for someone to cross the bridge above his head。 'I am a troll。 I live to eat。 I love the sound of hooves and feet and paws and claws on cobblestones。 For that's the sound of meat and bones!'。。。" So begins this traditional story told for a modern audience as the goats "clip clop" across that bridge instead of "trip-trap"-ing。Barnett welcome updates include things like lists modern foods that the troll dreams of savoring, all made from goat: goat benedict, goat jerky, jerk goat, curried goat, goat gravy, goat flambé, goat clambake ("with goat, not clams!")。 He is right on target to garner giggles for this great read-aloud text。 It brings joy to read aloud, as the phrases dance when read。Klassen sticks with a dark brown/salmon/pale aquamarine color palate, with the troll figure in a style similar to his I Want My Hat Back series of books。 Their darkness is a good match for the story being told。 (The bones and skulls on the endsheets in the water sets up the story well。)An excellent choice to include in units of fairy tales or anytime reading。 This would be great to adapt to reader's theater or act out in class as a play。Highly Recommended for PreS-grade 2。 。。。more

I'm a huge fan of Mac Barnett's and his way with words and Jon Klassen's illustrations are so fun and dark and beautiful。 This retelling is everything I wanted-it's poetic, it's hilarious and it's just great。 It would be a fun read aloud for teachers to use in a fairy tale lesson。 Thank you Scholastic! Mac Barnett’s retelling of this classic fairy tale has rhythm, rhyme, and vivid vocabulary making it fun and full of teaching opportunities。 Jon Klassen’s watercolor, ink and graphite art bring the story to life and then the team ends it with a surprise in both text and illustration。 Fun addition to any elementary library, whether home, classroom, public or school。Thanks for the arc, Scholastic。

The first in a new collection of fractured fairy tales, this retelling of the classic tale by the dream team of Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen was everything I hoped it would be and more。 Their version of the story is unique, clever, and highly amusing。 I almost felt sorry for the vulgar, hungry, and unsuspecting troll (but not really)。
